The Marrakech souk by the Jemaa El Fna square is probably one of the world's craziest! Getting lost in its labyrinthine druba (derb-singular; in Arabic meaning dead end street or quarter) is quite a pleasure when you are surrounded by all the razzle-dazzle.
Shopkeepers will wave at you, ask where you're from, and invite you to have a look inside their store. "Just look, just look," is their usual hook. You will be cautious and noncommittal but firm with your dealings with the locals. Some vendors might be a tad pushy, but with an iron smile and a solid "no, merci," you can trudge past them brash peddlers.
But when you find yourself wanting some exotic goods or trinkets, be prepared to engage in a friendly banter. Get to know the vendor. Ask questions. Ask for his store's name. Apparently, I learned that Hassan is a lucky name for a business, or a son, for that matter. I also learned that some shopkeepers will have multiple outposts in different sections of the souk.
The week we were in Marrakech, I went to the souk everyday. I hallucinated about living there, imagining myself to be a character from a Graham Greene or Robert Ludlum international espionage novel. I sat by a roadside café, sipping a cold drink, looking incessantly cool with my white linen caftan and trousers, and a Panama hat with the brim pulled down low. Marrakech is sensational!

Gorgeous Jen! Did I tell you I just booked a trip for this fall? You've got me crazy excited. I might have to buy some extra suitcases for all the spoils!
Your post just transported me to another world. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful photos - it really sounds fantastic!
And of course it is so photogenic...a photographer's paradise as your gorgeous pictures prove..I have been here acouple of times and loved it.. I find the colours here in Mexico similarly inspiring..
Gorgeous photos and what an amazing market - I wish I was there!
What a visual feast! Awesome.
So, so stunning! I, too, can't help thinking of Graeme Greene when I think of Moroccan souks.
My favorites are the pyramids of pigments (because raw pigments always excite me) and the pointy-toed mules because I collect them.
Hello dear Jen! I hope you're having an awesome trip!!!
Take care and have fun!
Love,
Dana
So beautiful!! I am incredibly envious...I am definitely looking forward to the time in my life when I'm done with school and I can travel. ;) You have a way of presenting other places as so incredibly vibrant...it gives me hope that my travels will be the same way! =)
petite leçon de français !
beaucoup de couleurs qui ce matin m'ont réveillée ! Merci ;)
God you photos are AMAZING!! I LOVED Marakesh as well so much, but I tell you what my photos are no where near as colourful and dont capture the scene like yours do. I just loved the chaos and noise and smells adn tastes. the only thing I hated was the goats head stall. Yuck!!
The reference to "Hallucinations" intrigues me. Are you sure that it was just from the sights of the place? Nice pics...
Those lamps, I want them so badly!!!!
What a title !! Love it! But not as much as I love all these photos -- the colors are extraordinary. And the quantity of items in each stand is outrageous - I remember being there -- it's just so dense!! My favorite pics of yours here are definitely the ones of the tea cups (hello selection!!) and the tea pots. Great post - text and photos - as usual ! Enjoy Le Weekend in Le Souk ! :)
love, love, love the pics Fong! i wish can take such amazing shots like yours someday...your site is really an eye candy ;)
The souk in Marrakesh really is like no other. Did you have to buy an extra suitcase to being treasures home? Sensational photos!
hey sis, i'm going to use that bike photo for my blog and print it for the gallery.
love the colors!!
Thank you all for following us through Marrakech. I would highly recommend anyone to visit Marrakech. It is also a great family destination, as we've seen plenty of European families with younger children in tow! Janelle, I'm glad you are going!! Have a ton of fun and take lots of photos as well! And yes, everybody, bring an extra suitcase or two!
Best,
Jen
I'm so curious, what did you buy?
Stunning picture. Well done Lassie
omg, I need to go!!!
You got a great eye for detail. I'm sure you bargained well at the souk in the medina. I couldn't buy much when I was there as I traveled with a backpack.
Your pictures and really good... as said before me it feels like the viewer is really there...
What a bust of colour in your pictures! SO BEAUTIFUL!
I'm absolutely loving colours this season, not just in clothes, nail polish and what not but also places and objects.
Thank you for sharing! These pictures brightened my day!
Cheryl
those plates & lamps are so amazing!!
beautiful photos, the colours are stunning!
Wow, I must comment here as the photos are stunning! The colors in them are just so amazing. I wish I could visit that place! Your blog is so great.
Absolutely fantastic! So well captured. It makes me want to go there!
Oh this is just exquisite!
Seriously Jen, your pictures are fantabulous!!! You really know how to bring out the colours. Absolutely dazzling!
Your photos of Marrakesh capture the colours & colourful atmoshphere beautifully. I spent some time there and it is as you have depicted. I am now following you on Twitter & hope to see more!
Cheers

These are amazing photos! I almost wish smell-o-vision were possible on a computer so I get a better sense of being there haha. I love how vibrant the colors are, everything in N.A. seems so washed out compared to the colors of the rest of the world. And totally yes, shopping is an essential part of travel!
This is a fantastic post...oh, I am dreaming to be there, though I do think it will be dangerous to go there too, I'll buy up everything. Happy week ahead Jen :P
Love the photos and the post! You make us feel like we are there!!
I love the mystical lights and that enchanting Arabic allure in Marrakech too, Djema el-Fna captivated me. Jen, thanks for stopping by at WildJunket, I'm already a fan of your blog!
you make me want to go to morocco even more now! ever since visiting la mosquee for tea in paris, i've wanted my own set of moroccan tea glasses like the ones in your picture. so beautiful!
anne
I love your pics. And Marrakech is a very interesting city. I was there a couple of years ago.
Your pictures are just spectacular!!! You made me want to visit Marrakesh!!!
I can see you sitting there in your white linen and panama hat pulled low! Despite the fact our hats of fantasy are different (mine a black Western one), we are truly sisters in love with the allure of travel. The photos are astounding (I'm always on the hunt for the appropriate adjective for your art). LOL
I've been to marrkech many times, it's amazing how things change. I don't think there are special clothes to wear there, except those dictated by the weather. More and more local girls wear occidental wear (and even sexy).
What you may find is that young men who will try to seduce girls, with a little respect and fun you can shorten these advances (maybe you'll like it if you're single). It's still a poor country, people try to find a way to get abroad or simply have fun, there's also prostitution, so watch your boyfriend.
What else, yes, Mosques are considered holy places, so non muslims are not allowed to visit (except historical ones like Casablanca's).
Except that, unless you don't have a criminal behaviour, you're ok. And even if you're criminal, justice is very modern (a mix between moderate islamic and french law). So they don't cut steelers' hands or whatever middleage sentences. Even capital punsihment is in it's way to be abolished.
I strongly advice you to visit the southern part, which is in the sahara. Merzouga, Erfoud, Ouarzazate are very special place not so far from Marrakesh, just google on them if you're curious.
Millions of people visit Marrakech each year, most of them like it's magic, i don't think you'll be deceived.
The colors are gorgeous. Way to capture a city's life and passion!
I loved Marrakech! Did you get out to Essaouria? My favorite part of shopping in the souks was dropping my 3-4 Arabic words: Humdallah, Shukran, Inshallah, etc It got such a reaction from them! Shopping in Marrakech is one of the items on my 10 Things I Love About Morocco list.
Cheers!
I really enjoyed looking at these photos. Good stuff.
You are living my dream, Jen!
