First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the winners of National Geographic Traveler Magazine Giveaway at Folie à Deux, courtesy of Magsdirect.com. Thanks for subscribing to Folie à Deux, and I wish you all a whole year filled with travel ideas!
Congratulations to theqfamily, bribrukla, conniechiwa, amutic!
Secondly, I would like to thank Tripbase for selecting Folie à Deux as a finalist in their 2009 Travel Blog Awards for Most Graphically Impressive. I am certainly honoured to be considered, alongside my winning pals at Gridskipper (Hi, Ben! 1st place!), National Geographic Intelligent Travel (Hi, Janelle!), and Prêt à Voyager (Hi, Anne!).
Thirdly, now that I have been awarded, the pressure is ON! So, in an effort to add another layer of texture and a new dimension to my blogging, I am putting together an experimental project I have called "Lomo-Lomo". It will address my new-found obsession with Lomography, while showcasing scenes from my hometown, Toronto (and around Toronto). Here are play things for the "Lomo-Lomo" project.
A new obsession with the old Soviet-style Lubitel Universal 166+ means I'll be toting this around town for the summer.

I also have an Holga CFN

And the up sides? The lomo cameras are cheap (well, cheaper than a digital SLR) and accidents are always welcomed during the creative process. That's what makes Lomography a winner. Of course, aside from its ability to transplant you to the analogue days of film - an era which I actually lived to tell about.

Your site is always a pleasure to visit and I can't wait to see your Lomo results - I know they'll be fabulous! I carry a Diana just about everywhere I go - love the results -- like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get! Congratulations on the Tripbase award -- another one to your deserved stockpile!
Congrats! You deserve it, your blog is always well-written and features great photography. Those photos are stunning! Why would people prefer to do analog over digital photos? I do like the look of those "retro" cameras, they're so quirky looking to me haha
First, congrats on the awards! Well deserved! And, second, what great kit! Those photos are so impressive! Love their tone. Say Jen, if an amateur such as I wanted to pick up some equipment like yours, whereabouts in Toronto might I like to browse?
Hi Daniel,
I am currently using a Canon 5D, although I had a half-frame or APS-sized Canon xti before I 'upgraded'. I actually wish I hadn't 'upgraded' for two reasons: Canon 5D is heavier to travel with and it basically does the same thing as the Canon Rebel xti. And oh, depending on where you stand on this, the full frame Canon 5D doesn't have a built-in flash, which is useful for those emergency shots in dark places, so you'd have to carry equipment for flash as well! The only reason I 'upgraded' (and this is why I keep using those quotes) is purely for my vanity! I thought a semi-pro full-frame camera would make me a better photographer. Well, it hasn't :( I learned that it's all in the skills!
I decided to buy a NEW camera because I didn't know much about cameras to buy it off from someone at Craig's list, although I scoured their ads as well. I ended up buying at Henry's for theses reasons: The price was good (they usually have end-of-summer/back-to-school sale in August - so wait 'til then to purchase) and they offer an upgrade to your equipment one year from the date of purchase, if you feel you are serious about photography and want to buy a higher grade camera! You basically hand them back your old one (excellent condition - and keep all the manuals and boxes) and pay the difference. Not a bad deal to me :)
P.S. accessories like filter and batteries are much more expensive for the full-frame cameras vs. APS-size like the xti or the 40D. I can't advice on Nikon, as I don't really know the brand, but I get feedback from people that Nikon is a bit cheaper than Canon with excellent results!
Is this the kind of info you're looking for?
-Jen
Congrats -- your blog is so beautiful; you deserve it. and now I have to check out the competition to see if they truly compare favorably.
And now with the Lomos you'll have options to distinguish yourself even more, because the shots won't look like anything else.
I've only played around with the plastic Russian cameras and they're good fun. Then again, I like lens flare, leaks, etc.
Wooooooooow, I found your lovely blog!! Amazing pictures!
Regards from Sweden & Agneta
Great camera, great images!!
My mum was a Brownie girl. This is not unlike.
Can't wait to see what you come up with!!
Hey Jen,
your 'new found' obsession with lomography. love it.
good choice with the holga too.
so much fun to be had.
35mm or developing medium format like it was 35mm (with c41) looks great.
if michel gondry was a photographer he'd be a lomographer.
can't wait to see some lomos up on here.
so many well dones for the blog recognition too. deserved.
That Soviet-style camera is such a beauty.
P.S. I'm originally from Toronto too! Yay!
Congrats to all....oove your cameras and pics.
